Indigenous voices are important
Using a strength-based approach ‘planting the seed’ creates Change Agents and Champions as a means to bridge our two worlds with one voice.
We are the oldest living culture in the world and amongst the first doctors, scientists, and engineers. Our culture has not only survived colonisation, but we are thriving. Moving away from the deficient discourse model and celebrating our wins has never been more important.
Where we can help!
Teaching
We provide participants with the confidence to be able to deliver Indigenous content based on their newly acquired knowledge, interactions with stakeholders, and yarns with Elders. Reinforce that student equity is everyone’s responsibility and be able to identify and manage racism in classrooms. Educators having had an immersed experience can demonstrate knowledge or evidence of relationship-building with community. They are better able to connect with Indigenous students creating a positive learner-centered environment founded on relationships, values and principles of trust, and empathy.
Research
The opportunity to yarn with Elders, Community Researchers and members ensures research is conducted with community, not on community. The research can then be tailored for the community, rather than a wide umbrella or one size fits all approach. Researchers can demonstrate true engagement with community as required by funding bodies i.e NHMRC, MRFF, and ARC. The researcher will be provided with a better understanding of issues surrounding cultural, and intellectual knowledge and data management and access as required by funding bodies.
Service
Institutions and educators alike, collegially in conjunction with community, facilitate more authentic relationships to support capacity building and enhance community capital.
The emphasis of this experience is to ensure that relationships are developed, moving well beyond a partnership. Relationships are developed over time to ensure genuine immersion as opposed to developing a partnership that is merely transactional.
Such transformative approaches need to go beyond the acknowledged fraught transactional nature of ‘ticking the box’ with regard to staff personal development opportunities.
